Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia Awareness Month in October 2022 witnessed a series of enlightening talks by Mark, aimed at raising awareness and encouraging understanding about dyslexia. These talks, held at schools across America, served as a platform for dialogue, connecting educators, students, and experts in the field of dyslexia. Mark's encounters with the International Dyslexia Association and his vision to connect dyslexic students from Bali, Kenya, and America through art exemplify the power of collaboration. Additionally, the completion of the book "Making a Mark," co-authored by Mark and Kate McElderry, signifies an important educational tool for dyslexic neurodiverse individuals.
During his time in America, Mark envisioned a remarkable initiative: connecting dyslexic neurodiverse students from Bali, Kenya, and America, acting as a conduit for cross-cultural connections and facilitating an exchange of ideas, this initiative aims to provide students with a platform for artistic collaboration.
During his journey in America, Mark was able to meet Kate McElderry and her family in person or the first time. Their combined passion of Dyslexia awareness led to the creation of their book, "Making a Mark." The book stands to be a valuable resource and educational tool, poised to empower, and educate both dyslexic individuals and the wider community, whilst being accessible to a younger audience. Mark is donating his royalties to a Dyslexia charity.
Looking ahead to the summer of 2023, Mark and Kate have plans to embark on a series of talks, sharing the news of their newly finished book and raising awareness about dyslexia and neurodiversity. These talks will serve as a platform to educate, inspire, and advocate for inclusive education. By harnessing the power of storytelling, Mark and Kate aim to amplify the voices of dyslexic neurodiverse individuals and encourage society to embrace their unique strengths.
Mark's talks during Dyslexia Awareness Month in America helped to share his knowledge and experience as well as enabling connections and promoting empathy. Through collaborations with the International Dyslexia Association, his vision to connect dyslexic students from different corners of the world through art, and the completion of "Making a Mark," Mark continues to advocate for inclusive education. As the journey unfolds, we eagerly anticipate the positive impact Mark, Kate, and their book will have on dyslexic neurodiverse individuals, empowering them to navigate the world with confidence and embrace their unique abilities.
In an era where sustainability and inclusivity are at the forefront of global conversations, a groundbreaking project is taking shape in the heart of Bali. Mark has been involved from the very start and has personally funded the first and second phase of construction of the first stages of very first of its kind, eco-friendly, carbon-neutral dyslexic neurodiverse school. This signifies a monumental step towards providing a supportive and inclusive learning environment for under privileged pupils in Bali, Indonesia.
At the core of this project lies a deep commitment to sustainability. The school's design incorporates eco-friendly materials, renewable energy sources, and a carbon-neutral approach. By embracing green building practices and minimizing their ecological footprint, the school is paving the way for a brighter, greener future. Its ethos serves as a powerful example for educational institutions worldwide.
With construction well underway, the school has already made significant strides. The administrative offices have been successfully relocated to the newly built premises, providing a dedicated space to support the school's operations. Additionally, the impressive auditorium has been completed and is ready to host a myriad of educational and community events, fostering a sense of togetherness and shared learning. We have five classrooms in use with a further four under construction.
Creating an optimal learning environment goes beyond mere infrastructure. The school has invested in carefully, prioritizing the unique needs of the students, whilst embracing a holistic approach to education and providing an inclusive space where every student can thrive.
The classrooms are equipped with cutting-edge technology, and due to Mark’s role as ambassador, laptops were kindly donated by Mark, which were pre-loaded with Dyslexia Scotland's training modules. These invaluable resources will empower educators to provide tailored support to students with dyslexia, nurturing their strengths and enabling them to reach their full potential.
In addition to the essential resources provided by Dyslexia Scotland, the school will also feature copies of the inspiring "Mission Dyslexia Superheroes" books. These books offer relatable stories and positive role models, empowering dyslexic children to embrace their unique abilities and perceive dyslexia as a superpower rather than a limitation. By promoting dyslexia awareness and acceptance, the school aims to create a nurturing and empowering environment for its students. We teach the students about caring for the environment and climate change.
The creation of the first stage of an eco-friendly, dyslexic neurodiverse school in Bali marks a significant personal milestone for Mark and Dr Andrea Carroll in his endeavour to give back to those in a less fortunate position than himself. Funding this project will aid with the provision of specialised resources, and cultivate a supportive atmosphere, which will make a lasting impact on the lives of dyslexic and neurodiverse students. The future of education in Bali shines brighter than ever!
Mark is delighted to have reached the 11-year milestone as an Ambassador of Dyslexia Scotland and he is still very honoured to be part of this wonderful organisation. His journey with dyslexia has inspired him to use his creative talents to raise awareness and support for those with Dyslexia around the Globe.
One of Mark's notable works is the sculpture he created in collaboration with Angus Hepburn, which depicts a young boy sitting on a pile of books, struggling to read as a representation of David and Goliath “David“ is cast in 100% Scottish gold and “Goliath” cast in bronze.. The sculpture is a powerful representation of the challenges that those with dyslexia face, and the need for greater understanding and support.
His dedication to dyslexia awareness extends beyond his work as an ambassador for Dyslexia Scotland. He has been heavily involved with the funding and improvement in learning at Rare Gem Talent School in Kenya, the first neurodiverse school in Kenya.
His commitment to dyslexia advocacy has also led him to work with other dyslexia organisations, including Odyssey School in America. In honour of Dyslexia Awareness Month, Mark collaborated with the school and created unique artwork with the pupils which showcased the talents and strengths of dyslexic students He also gave a talk to the students and their parents about his experience of Dyslexia.
Through his art and advocacy, he has shown that dyslexia doesn't have to be a barrier to success. Instead, he has used his experiences to inspire and uplift others, and to encourage greater understanding and support for those with dyslexia.
Mark's dedication to dyslexia awareness and support has been an inspiration to many. His work as a Dyslexia Scotland Ambassador, has helped create pathways to collaborations with other dyslexia organisations which along with his commitment to making a positive impact has helped many people with the challenges faced by those with dyslexia and in turn highlighted the need for greater understanding and support.
In the pursuit of inclusive education for dyslexic and neurodiverse students, the Kenya Dyslexia Organisation (KDO) has been working tirelessly to make a difference for a number of years, but funding has always been a barrier when it came to providing a safe and inspiring learning area for the pupils at Rare Gem Talent School. Recent developments have showcased their unwavering commitment, as they push ahead with the completion of the first stage of a groundbreaking new school. With the unwavering help of Mark, through his art, he was able to finance this venture and ensure the future of this “rare gem”.
Thanks to the remarkable efforts of Mark, KDO's vision for a new dyslexic neurodiverse school is now a reality. Mark's pivotal role in transferring the necessary funds has enabled the completion of the first stage, laying the foundation for an educational space that embraces diversity and supports dyslexic learners. This landmark achievement reflects the dedication and passion of both Mark and KDO in ensuring that every child, regardless of their learning differences, has access to quality education.
Recognising the importance of KDO's mission, the Government Education Department became involved in the initiative. They saw the potential of the new school to transform the educational landscape for dyslexic and neurodiverse students in Kenya. Mark's instrumental role caught the attention of the Education Ministers, who expressed a keen interest in meeting him at the Parliament in Nairobi. Additionally, an invitation to speak at an education conference further highlighted the significance of KDO's work. Collaborations between international organisations have played a crucial role in supporting KDO's endeavours. Dyslexia Scotland's involvement has been invaluable, providing essential resources that promote specialised teaching and dyslexia awareness. The provision of Laptops funded by Mark and equipped with Dyslexia Scotland's training modules, empowers educators to better understand and cater to the needs of dyslexic students. Furthermore, the Mission Dyslexia Superheroes book, offered by Dyslexia Scotland, serves as a source of inspiration, encouraging dyslexic children to embrace their unique strengths and abilities.
With the first stage of the new dyslexic neurodiverse school now complete, and future building work on the horizon, KDO is poised to make a profound impact on the lives of dyslexic learners in Kenya and Mark will continue to support them on their journey.
Art has the remarkable ability to transcend boundaries and evoke emotions, and when combined with a noble cause, it becomes a catalyst for change. Mark's work with the Cincinnati Zoo, and their beloved Fiona the Hippo, stands as a shining example of how art can raise funds and create worldwide awareness for dyslexia and neurodiverse issues.
Mark's art has become a powerful tool for raising funds dedicated to supporting dyslexia and neurodiverse individuals. The collaboration with the Cincinnati Zoo, in America and Fiona the Hippo, captured the hearts of people around the world. Donating his iconic "Hostage Hippo Table" to the international raffle held on Fiona’s 5th birthday, helped draw attention to the challenges faced by individuals with dyslexia and neurodiversity. In return for donating the Hippo table, Mark requested that a percentage of the funds raised would go towards the build of the foundations of the new school for Rare Gem Talent School and the Kenya Dyslexia Organisation. Through the generosity and passion of hippo fans and art enthusiasts, enough funds were raised to start the first stages of the new building foundations.
Among the many supporters of Mark's art and cause, a lovely lady, Melissa, from Massachusetts stood out. She won the famous "Hostage Hippos" and when she found out that Mark was heading over to Cincinnati Zoo, made a special journey to meet Mark when he visited the zoo in 2022. The meeting was a privilege for both Mark and Melissa.
One of Mark's other interests is his Amphicar. After owning it for 21 years he lovingly restored it and launched it in Loch Awe during 2013. Charities have previously expressed an interest for it to be used at events on the River Thames in London.
We are working very closely with the Princess Royal Trust for carers. We are arranging a Young Carers activity break at the Portsonachan Hotel, Loch Awe in June 2010. It is hoped that there will be celebrity appearances and media coverage of this event. Mark is also arranging for his Amphicar to be completed and available for the event.

The last of the limited edition of 99 Walk on the Wildside was auctioned in May 2007. The table sold for just under £8000 with all proceeds going to the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation.
Mark Stoddart donated the last in the edition of his most popular sculptures 'Hippo the Lad' to the Art for Survival Wildlife Auction at Christie's and was overjoyed when it received a bid reaching 40% more than anticipated from an American collector. The auction was a huge success and raised an impressive amount for The David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation, a foundation which through the tireless efforts, fund raising events and dedication of its wildlife experts, artists and celebrities around the world help fight for the survival of critically endangered mammals. Over the years Mark has donated 100% of the sale price of 7 pieces to the Foundation.
